Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed reservations about a potential peace deal with Russia, focusing on personal aspects of his role amid ongoing negotiations.
Sources familiar with the discussions indicate that Zelenskyy raised the issue of his attire during recent communications with U.S. President Donald Trump. The Ukrainian leader, who has worn military-style clothing since Russia's invasion began in 2022, questioned whether he could continue the practice if hostilities end.
Trump is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska later this week to discuss ending the conflict. The summit follows months of diplomatic efforts, including Trump's calls for a ceasefire and suggestions of territorial adjustments between Ukraine and Russia.
Zelenskyy has publicly stated that Ukraine will not cede land to Russia, emphasizing the need for his country's inclusion in any talks.
"Will I still be able to dress like this if there's peace?" Zelenskyy reportedly asked during a call with Trump, according to White House insiders.
Trump responded by highlighting alternative wardrobe options.
The exchange occurred as European leaders urged Zelenskyy's direct involvement in the Alaska meeting. NATO allies have backed Ukraine's position, stressing that any agreement must address security concerns across the continent.
"I think you'd look great in a suit, Volodymyr. We have the best tailors here," Trump said, per the sources.
Zelenskyy, however, remained firm on maintaining his current style.
The war has cost Ukraine dearly, with significant casualties and infrastructure damage since the full-scale invasion. U.S. aid to Kyiv has totaled billions, though Trump has pledged to resolve the conflict swiftly upon taking office.
Putin, for his part, has insisted on recognizing Russia's territorial gains in eastern Ukraine as part of any deal.
Advisors close to Zelenskyy note that the uniform has become a hallmark of his presidency, boosting morale among Ukrainian forces.
"If peace means giving up who I am as a leader, then we need to think carefully," Zelenskyy added in a subsequent statement.
Trump attempted to lighten the mood by referencing fashion trends. Despite the levity, the core issues of borders and security remain unresolved ahead of the summit.
