United States Senator Bernie Sanders has officially launched his Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here tour, which began last week in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Vermont senator, known for his decades-long career in public service, is once again hitting the road to rally against the wealthy elite. Sanders is asking supporters to dig into their pockets and donate to fund this nationwide trek. The irony isn’t lost on anyone familiar with his finances: Sanders himself is a millionaire, with a net worth bolstered by book deals and real estate.
Sanders has spent years decrying the influence of millionaires, big banks, and corporate giants like Big Pharma. Now, he’s aiming his rhetoric at President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, framing them as the poster boys of a growing oligarchy.
“We’re fighting a system where billionaires buy elections and drown out the working class,” Sanders declared at his Omaha stop.
His tour targets districts that flipped Republican in the 2024 House races after backing Joe Biden in 2020, a strategic move to stir up grassroots momentum.
The senator’s plea for donations has raised eyebrows, given his own wealth. Sanders owns three homes and has earned millions from books like Our Revolution.
“I’m just a humble public servant asking the 99% to help me take on the 1%,” he said during his Iowa City event on Friday. Critics point out that Sanders’ personal fortune puts him closer to the elite he rails against than the average American scraping by.
Sanders’ tour comes at a time when economic inequality remains a hot-button issue, with the wealth gap widening under the previous administration. His message resonates with supporters who see him as a champion of the little guy, even if his bank account tells a different story.
“Bernie’s the only one brave enough to call out Musk and Trump by name,” said attendee Jane Miller, a 34-year-old barista donating $10 despite her student debt.
The tour plans to crisscross the country, amplifying Sanders’ warnings about authoritarianism and corporate greed.
Funding a coast-to-coast campaign isn’t cheap, and Sanders is banking on small-dollar contributions to keep the wheels turning. His website features a donation button front and center, urging fans to chip in.
“Every dollar helps us fight the billionaire class stealing our democracy,” Sanders told a crowd in Iowa.
