In an exclusive interview with The Washington Wick, former Vice President Kamala Harris revealed her initial misconceptions about the role of "Border Czar," a position she was appointed to in March 2021.
The interview took a turn when Harris admitted to being somewhat unprepared for the realities of the job.
"It was one of those days, you know," Harris began. "I was sipping on some wine, listening to Tupac's 'Changes' — just enjoying a moment of peace when I got the call from Biden's handler. They said, 'You're our new Border Czar.' I thought it was one of those made-up titles where you just show up, smile, talk about joy, and do nothing."
This admission was met with a cackle from Harris, who then shifted to discuss the actual responsibilities of the position.
"I mean, who knew there was so much more to it than photo-ops and press releases?"
Under her tenure, the focus was predominantly on useless efforts to address the root causes of illegal immigration from Central America rather than direct border management.
According to statistics from the Office of Homeland Security, during the first three years of the Biden administration, the number of deportations averaged around 180,000 per year.
This is a stark contrast to the approximately 432,000 deportations in the fiscal year 2013 under Tom Homan's leadership at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), during the Obama administration, or the roughly 448,972 deportations per year under President Donald Trump's first term.
Harris expressed a newfound respect for the work done by Homan, who was recently appointed as the Border Czar by President Trump.
"Tom Homan really redefined what being a Border Czar means," she acknowledged. "He actually does the job, focused on enforcement, and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty with the nitty-gritty of immigration policy."
When asked about her own contributions, Harris mentioned, "We worked on investments in Central America, trying to tackle why people are leaving in the first place. But I see now, there's a whole other side to this job that I didn't grasp initially."
Harris's reflections come at a time when immigration continues to be a hot-button issue in U.S. politics. Her acknowledgment of her initial misunderstanding and the subsequent learning curve provided a rare glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of high-level political appointments.
The role of Border Czar under Homan prioritizes deportations, with a return to more stringent border enforcement policies.
"I guess I'll have to take a page from Homan's book if I ever get back into this role," Harris quipped, cackling loudly at her own joke.
