Across New York City, white liberal women are donning colorful burqas in anticipation of what they believe will be a transformative era under the administration of Zohran Mamdani, the progressive Democratic Socialist poised to lead the city.
The trend, which has swept through neighborhoods like Williamsburg and Park Slope, is being hailed as a bold statement of solidarity with the incoming leadership’s vision, which many expect will usher in policies rooted in equity and cultural inclusivity.
The burqa, a full-body covering traditionally associated with certain Islamic practices, has been reimagined in vibrant hues like magenta, teal, and sunflower yellow, with some featuring patterns inspired by local street art.
Women purchasing these garments from pop-up boutiques in Brooklyn say they view the attire as a symbol of liberation from societal expectations and a safeguard against perceived threats to their autonomy.
Mamdani, a vocal advocate for socialism, has not explicitly called for such attire, but his platform emphasizing systemic change has inspired this preemptive cultural shift.
“I feel so free in my burqa,” said Chloe Whitaker, a 29-year-old graphic designer from Greenpoint. “It’s about rejecting the male gaze and embracing a future where we can all thrive under equitable governance.”
The movement coincides with Mamdani’s rise, following his election on a platform that promised to dismantle capitalist structures and prioritize communal welfare.
His past advocacy for policies like universal rent control and defunding the police has energized a base eager to align with his vision.
Some women say the burqas prepare them for a potential shift toward Sharia-inspired policies, which they view as a progressive counter to conservative ideologies.
Local seamstress Amara Jones, who has sold over 200 custom burqas this month, noted the surge in demand.
“My clients want to express their individuality while showing they’re ready for the new system,” she said. “They’re stitching their values into every thread.”
Not all reactions are celebratory. Some residents express confusion over the trend, noting that Mamdani’s platform does not mention Sharia law or mandatory dress codes.
Still, the burqa-wearing cohort remains undeterred, organizing “Burqa Brunch” events to discuss their hopes for a reimagined city.
“This is about taking control of our narrative,” said Emily Chen, a 34-year-old yoga instructor from the Upper West Side, wearing a tie-dye burqa.
“We’re not waiting for permission to live in a world where our rights are protected from Republicans or anyone else.”
Vendors report that burqa sales are outpacing athleisure in some boutiques, with online retailers struggling to keep up.
The phenomenon has sparked debates on social media, where users post photos of their outfits with hashtags like #BurqaLiberation and #MamdaniMode.
As the city awaits Mamdani’s inauguration, the colorful burqas have become a visible emblem of a community preparing for what they believe will be a radical departure from the past.

No accounting for stupidity. They have no idea what is in store for them if this actually happens. It may seem like fun now but they better pray it doesn't happen.
Jews are at the center of that. If you doubt it, you are pushing the lie that they aren't or you are woefully ignorant. The core cadre of "White women" in that cluster are Jews, who neither are nor even in most cases appear to be White.
Just more stupid American women being let to their own imprisonment, wow you just have to laugh over this.
Mamdani won't force women to wear burqas, but he very likely will continue to make rap videos about his Nani. Having said that, it would not surprise me if liberal white NYC women chose to wear burqas (I must confess, I really like the colors)!!
These women need to beat themselves and gentile mutilation themselves if they go against Sharia law. If this is truely the path they choose. No man will walk this path with them. But lines of Islamic men with ve there to commit these abuses upon them...
"Don't as argue with stupid, they'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."
