Parents Furious Over Trump's Revival of School Fitness Tests

ree

Parents across the nation expressed outrage after President Donald Trump signed an executive order reinstating the Presidential Fitness Test in public schools.

The program, which requires students to complete exercises such as pull-ups, sit-ups, and a mile run, had been discontinued during the Obama administration in favor of a less competitive youth fitness initiative focused on overall health.

The test originated in the 1950s as part of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, aimed at promoting physical activity among schoolchildren.

It was phased out after the 2012-2013 school year amid concerns that its emphasis on performance metrics contributed to stress and exclusion for some students.

One parent, Karen Wilkins from suburban Illinois, described the reinstatement as a direct attack on children's self-esteem.

"This is nothing but fat-shaming disguised as patriotism," Wilkins said. "Kids are already dealing with enough pressure, and now they're being judged on whether they can do a pull-up? It's going to skyrocket anxiety and depression rates."

Childhood obesity affects nearly 20 percent of children and adolescents in the United States, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health experts note that regular physical activity could help address this issue, though implementation of mandatory tests has sparked debates over inclusivity.

Another parent, Mark Thompson from Texas, echoed similar sentiments while attending a school board meeting. "Trump's order ignores the mental health crisis our kids face," Thompson stated.

"Forcing kids to exercise will only make things worse, especially for those who don't fit the so-called ideal body type."

Observers at protests noted that many of the vocal parents appeared to carry extra weight themselves, potentially standing to gain from increased physical activity routines.

The executive order directs schools to begin administering the test in the upcoming academic year, with awards for top performers.

Education officials have begun preparing guidelines to integrate the program, emphasizing that it aims to encourage lifelong fitness habits. Despite the backlash, the White House defended the move as a step toward national health improvement.
