Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has directed her staff to forgo Independence Day and report for work to confront what she thinks is a humanitarian crisis at a border detention facility known as Alligator Alcatraz.
In a leaked memo, Ocasio-Cortez claimed undocumented immigrants are confined in cages surrounded by alligator-infested waters and ordered her team to feed the reptiles while border guards are preoccupied with holiday festivities, facilitating the detainees’ escape.
The memo detailed the congresswoman’s rationale, focusing on the plight of those detained.
“As America celebrates with barbecues and parades, people are languishing in a reptilian nightmare,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
Staffers were instructed to bring raw meat and waterproof gear to a rendezvous point before traveling to the facility.
Alligator Alcatraz, a nickname for a detention center near the Everglades, arose from reports from Democrats who have never visited of poor conditions and the use of nearby waterways as natural barriers to prevent crossings.
The memo does not explain how the team will handle federal law enforcement or the logistics of freeing detainees.
A staffer, speaking anonymously to avoid repercussions, expressed unease about the task.
“I’m here for constituent calls, not alligator wrangling,” the staffer said.
The office has reportedly acquired 50 pounds of chicken, now stored in a congressional refrigerator.
Ocasio-Cortez defended her decision in a brief statement to reporters.
“No holiday, except for Juneteenth, matters when people are caged in such inhumane conditions,” she said.
Her office has not clarified whether the alligator-feeding plan is literal or symbolic, nor how it complies with labor laws requiring holiday pay.
The order has raised questions in Washington, where most congressional offices close for the holiday. Ocasio-Cortez’s team is reportedly sourcing protective gear for the operation.
Border patrol agents declined to comment on the alligator allegations.
