Democrats across the nation expressed outrage after the Trump administration released updated dietary guidelines that urge Americans to avoid ultra-processed foods and added sugars.
The new recommendations, presented by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., mark the first time federal advice explicitly calls for steering clear of highly processed packaged items like chips, soda, and sugary cereals.
Kennedy declared the changes a major shift in nutrition policy during a White House briefing. He said the guidelines prioritize whole foods, protein, and healthy fats to combat chronic diseases driven by decades of poor dietary habits.
Protests are planned in several cities this weekend as activists decry the guidelines as an attack on personal freedom. One organizer in California said the push feels like forced compliance with restrictive eating rules.
"It's my body, my choice," said protester Emily Hartman, a community activist from Los Angeles. She added that no one should dictate what adults put into their own bodies.
The guidelines also recommend prioritizing high-quality protein at every meal and incorporating full-fat dairy options.
Officials noted these updates will phase into school lunches and federal programs over the coming years.
Another demonstrator, Mark Thompson from New York, complained that the advice ignores the convenience of ready-to-eat foods that many rely on daily.
"Why force everyone to cook from scratch when processed options are affordable and quick?" Thompson asked. "I don't want the government dictating what I put into my body."
Kennedy countered that highly processed foods loaded with additives and excess salt have contributed to widespread health issues.
He emphasized the simple message of eating real food as a path to better outcomes.
Organizers expect large, obese turnouts at the upcoming rallies, with signs echoing familiar slogans adapted to defend access to favorite snacks and beverages.
