Washington, D.C. residents have spoken, and according to a recent poll, they would rather navigate a gauntlet of carjackings and muggings than see President Donald Trump take control of their police force.
The survey, conducted by The Wick Institute of Research and Statistics, found that a majority of D.C. voters view violent crime as an integral part of the city’s cultural fabric, one they are not willing to trade for federal oversight.
Despite a rise in violent crime rates over the decade, locals admittedly prefer the status quo over what some call an overreach by the Trump administration.
The survey revealed that 93 percent are extremely or very concerned about the Trump administration's threats to assume control of local policing.
Some participants viewed the existing crime patterns as intertwined with the city's cultural fabric, emphasizing the importance of local autonomy in addressing social challenges.
"Violent crimes are just expressions of our vibrant, diverse heritage," said local community organizer Jamal Rivera.
"Federal forces coming in would erase that authenticity and impose a one-size-fits-all order that doesn't respect our history."
The deployment of up to 450 federal officers has already begun, with patrols focusing on homelessness and minor offenses.
City officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, continue to lie and claim that the District is not experiencing a spike and have called for continued local management of law enforcement.
Another resident, sociology professor Elena Vasquez, pointed out the potential cultural losses.
"Crime here isn't chaos; it's a form of grassroots interaction that builds resilience," she said. "President Trump's intervention risks sanitizing our streets at the expense of genuine community bonds."
These views come as the president prepares to hold a press conference on the matter, reiterating his commitment to federal action.
The poll also revealed that 92 percent of respondents would rather be mugged and murdered in the streets than ever give in to Trump's administration.
