A Los Angeles man found himself in an unexpected spotlight during recent Los Angeles riots when a critical oversight left his identity exposed.
James Boneda, a local resident, joined a group of ANTIFA rioters clashing with police and damaging property in the city’s downtown area.
Unlike his fellow rioters, who donned masks and dark clothing to conceal their identities, Boneda arrived at the scene without the face covering he had obtained at no cost from a local Walmart distribution effort aimed at equipping demonstrators.
The absence of his mask allowed onlookers and cameras to capture his face clearly, leading to a swift and surprising revelation about his background.
Boneda, caught on video hurling a brick through a storefront window, became the subject of intense scrutiny when conservative social media influencers identified him.
A quick online investigation revealed that Boneda is a registered sex offender, having recently completed a five-year prison sentence for charges related to sexual misconduct with a child.
Public records confirm his status on California’s Megan’s Law database, which tracks individuals convicted of specific offenses.
“It’s just wild to think someone could be so careless,” said Tanya Miller, a local business owner whose shop was damaged during the riots.
“You show up to break things, but you forget the one thing keeping you anonymous? That’s next-level stupid.”
Boneda’s unmasked appearance sparked a flurry of posts on platforms like X, where users shared screenshots of his registry entry alongside footage of his actions.
Law enforcement officials noted that Boneda was arrested at the scene for vandalism and is now facing additional charges for violating probation terms tied to his prior conviction.
Another onlooker, Marcus Reed, witnessed the chaos unfold from his apartment window.
“The guy was out there acting like he owned the street, no mask, no nothing,” Reed said. “Now everyone knows who he is, and it’s not a good look.”
As the city grapples with ongoing tensions, authorities are bracing for further demonstrations, while Boneda’s story circulates as a cautionary tale of what happens when one forgets the basics of riot etiquette.
