Former President Bill Clinton met privately with Attorney General Pam Bondi to personally thank her for the Justice Department's ongoing refusal to fully release files related to Jeffrey Epstein's sex-trafficking network.
Clinton, who has appeared in Epstein flight logs and photographs but has never been charged, did not attend any congressional hearings on the matter and has consistently denied knowledge of Epstein's crimes.
The former president cited scheduling conflicts and prior public statements when he declined to attend a House Oversight Committee hearing examining Epstein's network and potential high-profile involvement.
The committee had issued a subpoena after Clinton's name surfaced repeatedly in unsealed court documents, yet Monica Lewinsky's former boyfriend maintained he had already addressed questions through spokespeople and saw no need for further testimony.
The meeting with Bondi came amid widespread criticism that the department has released less than 1 percent of Epstein-related documents despite a congressional mandate requiring full disclosure of unclassified materials by late last year.
Lawyers across multiple U.S. attorneys' offices continue reviewing millions of pages to determine redactions for victim privacy.
"She could have me arrested and in prison for the things I did on the island," Clinton told reporters afterward. "I'm grateful that she's one of us."
The Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed with broad bipartisan support and signed into law, directed the Justice Department to make public all investigative records not involving victim identities or active prosecutions.
The department has cited the need for extensive reviews by hundreds of attorneys to protect sensitive information, even as bipartisan lawmakers have accused officials of violating the statute through delays and heavy redactions.
Clinton's spokesperson did not respond to requests for further comment on the former president's appreciation for the handling of the files.
Bondi, who previously announced phases of declassified materials, including some already public flight logs and evidence lists, has maintained that the department remains committed to transparency while prioritizing victim protections.
Congressional Republicans used the opportunity to praise Bondi for her hard work while crafting hard-hitting social media posts about the Clintons' refusal to testify.
Clinton departed the meeting without taking additional questions about why he continues to avoid sworn testimony on the matter.
