A man arrested for attempting to meet a minor for illicit purposes told authorities it was his first and only attempt, vowing never to repeat the behavior.
The suspect, identified as John Jenkins, was apprehended in a sting operation conducted by a local pedophile hunting group after he arrived at a predetermined location expecting to meet a 13-year-old he had been communicating with online.
The individual turned out to be an undercover officer. Jenkins expressed shock during his arrest, claiming he had no prior history of such actions.
"I swear, this was the only time I ever tried anything like this," Jenkins said in a statement to police. "I’m not that kind of person."
The operation was part of a broader effort by authorities to combat online predation, a growing concern as digital platforms provide new avenues for illegal activity.
Jenkins, a 38-year-old with no previous criminal record, reportedly spent weeks exchanging messages before agreeing to meet in person. Officers noted his insistence on his innocence stood out, even as evidence of his intent was clear.
"It’s not who I am," Jenkins added. "I just got curious this one time."
Investigators described the case as routine, with many suspects offering similar defenses when confronted. The sting operation has led to multiple arrests in recent months, targeting individuals who exploit online anonymity.
Jenkins’s attorney has since filed a motion arguing his client was entrapped, claiming he had no predisposition to such behavior before the operation.
"I believe John when he says this isn’t him," said his lawyer, Emily Carter. "He’s a good man who made one mistake."
Community reactions have been mixed, with some expressing sympathy for Jenkins’s claim of a one-off lapse. Others, however, argue that the arrest reflects a broader societal issue requiring stricter oversight. Prosecutors intend to pursue charges, citing the clarity of the evidence.
Jenkins remains in custody awaiting a hearing.
"This was just a fluke," Jenkins reiterated to investigators. "This is my first and only time, and I swear it will never happen again."
