Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced a conditional plan to restore order in Minneapolis amid ongoing unrest following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by federal agents. Walz said he would take decisive steps to end the disturbances if conservatives agree to stop using a specific insult against him.
The governor cited repeated incidents of people driving past his residence and shouting the word "retarded" as a major source of strain on his household.
Walz has faced intensified personal attacks since President Donald Trump described him as "seriously retarded" in public statements, comments that Walz said have encouraged similar behavior from passing motorists.
"I'm not retarded," Walz said in a brief statement. "I'm doing the best I can under difficult circumstances."
The unrest in Minneapolis escalated after ICE agents shot and killed Renee Good, a local resident obstructing an immigration enforcement operation.
Protests have continued for days, with demonstrators confronting federal officers, with some incidents involving tear gas and arrests.
The disturbances have disrupted daily life in parts of the city already tense from a separate federal probe into alleged fraud in social services programs.
Walz has drawn criticism over billions in potential losses from schemes involving daycare centers and other services, many linked to members of the Somali community in the Twin Cities. Federal prosecutors have charged dozens in related cases, with estimates of stolen funds reaching into the billions across various programs.
The governor's offer ties the resolution of the current street-level chaos directly to an end of the targeted personal ridicule. Walz emphasized that the family impact from the drive-by insults has become a daily burden, compounding the pressures of governing during multiple overlapping crises.
"I can't even sleep at night. Every time I close my eyes, I see one of those low-life losers calling me a retard," Walz explained.
Walz maintained that fulfilling the condition would allow him to focus fully on calming the situation in Minneapolis without distraction from the ongoing verbal harassment.
The proposal has drawn immediate attention as an unconventional approach to addressing both public disorder and private grievances in a single bargain.
