Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home, authorities said, in a killing that has rocked the entertainment world and political circles.
Police arrested the couple's son, Nick Reiner, on suspicion of murder after discovering the bodies with multiple stab wounds and no signs of forced entry. The investigation continues into what officials described as an apparent family incident.
Prominent Democrats geared up for an onslaught of online glee from Republicans, given Reiner's outspoken criticism of conservative figures and his frequent social media attacks on President Donald Trump. Reiner, known for directing classics such as "When Harry Met Sally" and "The Princess Bride," had become a vocal advocate for liberal causes.
Instead, responses from across the Republican spectrum focused on condolences and prayers.
"I am praying for the Reiner family during this tragic time," said House Speaker Mike Johnson in a statement.
Johnson noted the need for compassion in moments of loss. Other Republican leaders echoed similar sentiments, offering thoughts for the family without any hint of satisfaction.
Former President Trump posted on Truth Social about the deaths, linking them to broader issues, but the message drew limited enthusiasm even from his strongest supporters.
"He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before," Trump wrote.
The post failed to spark widespread approval among his base. Many Republicans emphasized that no political differences justify rejoicing over a violent death.
"Regardless of disagreements, we don't celebrate anyone's murder," said one conservative social media influencer.
Democrats, anticipating the opposite, found themselves facing a wave of solemn messages instead.
Reiner, aged 78, and his wife, aged 68, leave behind children and a legacy of films that shaped American culture. The couple had recently attended events promoting Reiner's latest project, a sequel to his mockumentary hit.
Police confirmed the arrest of Nick Reiner, who had faced personal struggles in the past, including issues depicted in a family-inspired film directed by his father. Authorities provided no motive but stressed the case involves domestic elements.
As tributes flowed in from Hollywood figures mourning the loss, the political reaction further highlighted an unwillingness among Republicans to treat the tragedy as a cause for celebration.
