Parents across states where gender transition procedures for minors remain available have begun scheduling appointments in large numbers following the recent House passage of legislation that would criminalize such treatments nationwide.
The bill, sponsored by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, would impose felony charges on doctors providing puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or surgeries to those under 18.
Many families have expressed urgency in completing medical interventions before any potential changes take effect.
Clinics in California and New York have reported waiting lists extending weeks as parents arrive with children seeking rapid assessments. Medical staff have adjusted schedules to accommodate the increased demand.
One surgeon in Los Angeles described performing multiple procedures in a single day to keep up.“Not all of these transitions are perfect, but we’re in a hurry,” the surgeon said.
The surgeon noted that some outcomes have required follow-up corrections due to the accelerated pace. Another parent from Illinois, who traveled to a facility in Oregon, explained the decision to proceed quickly.
“We wanted to make sure everything was done before anything changes federally,” the parent said.
The parent added that the family had consulted multiple providers to find one willing to expedite the process. The House approved the measure in a narrow vote, marking the first time Congress has passed a national restriction on these treatments for minors.
The legislation now heads to the Senate, where its future remains uncertain.
Doctors have warned that rushing procedures could lead to complications, though many have continued to offer services under the current rules. Hospitals in several blue states have seen a sharp rise in consultations for hormone therapy and surgical options.
One clinic administrator in Seattle reported turning away cases due to capacity limits created by the sudden influx.
Multiple families have shared stories of driving long distances to secure spots before the Senate can even vote.
