Former CNN anchor Don Lemon appeared at a St. Paul church on Sunday morning dressed in a full Lucifer costume, complete with red horns and a pitchfork, as he joined a group of anti-ICE protesters who stormed the sanctuary during services.
Lemon and the protesters believed the pastor was somehow connected to Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, a claim church officials immediately denied.
The intrusion halted the worship service as congregants watched the group march down the aisle, shouting slogans against federal immigration enforcement.
"We have this thing called the First Amendment," Lemon told reporters from the Washington Wick while still in costume outside the church.
"I was just engaging in journalism. All of the best journalists have stormed a Church or two dressed as Satan."
Lemon later attempted to distance himself from the incident after Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon announced a federal investigation into the disruption of a house of worship.
The protesters entered the building, convinced the pastor was assisting ICE, despite no evidence being presented to support the accusation. Church members described the scene as chaotic, with some families leaving early to avoid confrontation.
Dhillon stated that houses of worship are not public forums for protests and emphasized the Justice Department's commitment to examining the event.
Lemon maintained that his costume and presence were part of a legitimate effort to highlight immigration issues.
He insisted the devil outfit was intended to make a broader point about perceived evils in the system, though he acknowledged the group appeared to have misidentified the church's role.
The incident drew immediate attention from federal authorities reviewing potential violations related to interfering with religious services. Lemon has not commented further on the ongoing investigation.
