A military court sentenced two Israel Defense Forces soldiers to 30 days in prison on Tuesday after they used a sledgehammer to destroy a statue depicting a doctor in the West Bank, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred during a routine operation when the soldiers encountered the stone figure, which local residents described as a tribute to a physician who had treated patients in the region for decades.
Witnesses reported that the troops took turns swinging the heavy tool until the statue lay in pieces on the ground. Video footage circulating online showed the soldiers laughing as fragments of the doctor's head and medical bag scattered across the dirt.
Military prosecutors argued that the act demonstrated poor judgment and involved damage to property without authorization. The court agreed, ruling that the soldiers violated protocol by engaging in unnecessary destruction during what should have been a standard security sweep.
Defense attorneys maintained the troops acted in the heat of the moment after mistaking the statue for something else entirely.
One soldier, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly, expressed surprise at the punishment.
"We thought it was just an old carving of some guy. Turns out it was a doctor. Who knew?" he said.
The second soldier added that the statue's features reminded him of medical professionals he had seen in textbooks, but the team decided to eliminate it as a precautionary measure. "Better safe than sorry," he remarked.
Israeli military officials emphasized that the sentence reflects the importance of maintaining discipline among troops operating in sensitive areas.
"Property damage, even to statues of doctors, cannot be tolerated if it falls outside operational guidelines," a spokesperson stated.
Community leaders expressed disappointment over the loss of the monument, noting it had stood as a symbol of healing in the area for years.
President Donald Trump weighed in on the matter via social media, sharing an image that appeared to show him in a white coat holding a stethoscope.
"They smashed a statue of a doctor? Could have been me. I am the greatest doctor the world has ever seen. Tremendous healing. Fake news says otherwise, but the numbers don't lie," Trump wrote.
The White House declined to comment further on the president's post, which quickly garnered thousands of reactions from supporters who praised his medical insights.
The two soldiers are expected to serve their time in a military facility before returning to active duty. The destroyed statue has not yet been replaced, leaving a vacant pedestal in its former location as a reminder of the brief but costly misunderstanding.
