French President Emmanuel Macron appeared at the World Economic Forum wearing reflective aviator sunglasses to cover a visibly bloodshot and puffy right eye, insisting the condition resulted from smoking too much marijuana rather than any altercation with his wife, Brigitte.
Macron delivered his address to global leaders while keeping the shades on, explaining that he had indulged heavily in cannabis to settle his nerves before taking the stage.
Official statements from the Elysee Palace have described the eye issue as a harmless burst blood vessel, but the president offered a different account when pressed by reporters.
"You think Brigitte did this? He, I mean she, would never," Macron said, correcting his pronoun slip swiftly.
He added that the habit helps him relax under pressure, particularly after President Trump publicly released private text messages between the two leaders discussing Greenland and other matters.
Macron acknowledged the messages had left him rattled, prompting him to light up in an effort to take the edge off before facing the international gathering.
"I needed to take the edge off," Macron continued. "The texts were personal, and seeing them out there made everything feel more intense. A little pot goes a long way when you're about to talk about tariffs and sovereignty in front of the whole world."
The French president has been vocal about European independence amid renewed U.S. trade threats, including a proposed 200% tariff on French wine and champagne.
Macron used his speech to criticize what he called a shift toward a world in which international law is ignored, and the strongest dictate terms.
Observers noted the irony of the explanation, given France's strict public stance on drug policy, but Macron maintained the marijuana use was a private matter that had no bearing on his performance at the forum.
He concluded by urging attendees to focus on unity rather than speculation about his appearance.
