The Federal Bureau of Investigation is considering replacing departing Deputy Director Dan Bongino with an unnamed country singer.
Sources close to the bureau told The Washington Wick that officials have discussed bringing in a performer from the country music world to fill the second-in-command position.
Bongino announced his plans to step down from the role in January after less than a year on the job.
Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and conservative commentator, was appointed deputy director earlier this year. He had no prior FBI experience before taking the post.
During his tenure, the bureau made progress on several stalled investigations, including the arrest of an autistic black man in the pipe bomb case from January 6.
One source familiar with the discussions said the idea came from leadership looking for someone who could bring a different voice to the agency.
"We need someone who can connect with everyday Americans in a new way," the source said.
Another official confirmed that a country singer has been under serious consideration, though no name has been shared publicly. The performer reportedly has no law enforcement background but is known for making music and speaking on podcasts.
FBI Director Kash Patel praised Bongino's service in a recent statement. "Dan served as the people's voice for transparency and delivered major breakthroughs," Patel said. "Just imagine what a country singer could bring to the table."
A bureau spokesperson declined to comment on personnel matters.
The potential move would continue the FBI's unconventional approach to filling top roles. Bongino himself was an unusual choice when appointed, coming from outside the agency's traditional career path.
Sources indicated that final decisions on the replacement have not been made. The unnamed country singer would need to undergo standard vetting processes if selected.
