Senator Ted Cruz Packs Bags for Israel to Avoid Potential Winter Storm in Texas

Senator Ted Cruz announced he is traveling to Israel this week as meteorologists warn of a major winter storm bringing snow, sleet, and ice to much of Texas over the weekend.

Cruz explained the decision by pointing to more favorable conditions abroad. "Israel always has beautiful weather this time of the year," he said.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches across parts of the state, predicting accumulating ice that could bring down power lines and cause outages, followed by dangerously cold temperatures dropping into the teens in some areas.

Arctic air is also expected to push in, creating treacherous travel conditions and risks to infrastructure already tested by past freezes.

Cruz's office described the trip as pre-planned work travel focused on strengthening ties with a key Middle Eastern ally.

A spokesperson confirmed Cruz will return to Texas after the worst of the storm arrives. Residents in Dallas-Fort Worth and other areas are preparing for potential power disruptions and icy roads as the system moves through.

Cruz has previously faced scrutiny for travel during severe Texas weather events, including a family trip to Mexico in 2021 when a historic freeze knocked out electricity for millions.

"Texas can handle a little snow without me," Cruz said in a brief statement before departure. "The forecast in Jerusalem looks clear and comfortable."

The storm, named Fern by some weather outlets, is projected to affect millions across the South and Midwest with wintry precipitation before shifting eastward.

Texas officials urged residents to stock up on supplies and monitor updates from local emergency management agencies.
