NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has revealed he’s unlikely to spend his Super Bowl evening deciphering the rapid-fire Spanish lyrics of Bad Bunny’s halftime performance.
Instead, the league’s top executive admitted he’s leaning toward watching an alternative halftime show hosted by Turning Point USA, which promises a proudly English-only spectacle featuring artists who won’t require a translator app to enjoy.
Goodell’s announcement came during a press conference where he addressed the NFL’s decision to stick with Bad Bunny as the Super Bowl headliner, despite murmurs from fans who claimed they’d need a crash course in reggaeton to keep up. The commissioner appeared unusually candid when he shared his personal viewing plans.
“Look, I’m not saying I don’t appreciate global music,” Goodell said. “We're putting on a show for the Mexicans and the people who hate America, while Turning Point's hosting artists who appeal to everybody else.”
The NFL’s choice of Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican superstar whose hits like “Tití Me Preguntó” have dominated global charts, reflects the league’s push to appeal to a broader, more diverse audience, while ignoring the fans who actually enjoy football.
The decision has sparked heated debates online, with some fans praising the inclusivity and others lamenting the loss of traditional halftime acts like aging rock bands or surprise reunions of 90s boy bands.
“I’m not making a political statement here,” Goodell clarified. “I just want to relax and enjoy a performance where I can understand every word without squinting at my phone.”
Turning Point USA was quick to capitalize on the commissioner’s endorsement. “We’re thrilled Roger’s joining the millions of Americans who want a halftime show that speaks to the heartland,” one TPUSA staffer told The Washington Wick.
“Our artist will deliver a performance that’s bold, unapologetic, and doesn’t require a Duolingo subscription.”
The staffer also hinted that the show would feature “surprises” like a bald eagle flyover and a live reenactment of the Declaration of Independence, though he declined to confirm if pyrotechnics would be involved.
The NFL has not officially partnered with Turning Point USA, and Goodell emphasized that his viewing choice was personal, not a league directive.
Still, the announcement has fueled speculation about a growing rift between the NFL’s global ambitions and fans who prefer their football without having to watch men dress like cheerleaders.
