Gavin Newsom Burns American Flag to Challenge Trump’s Executive Order

California Governor Gavin Newsom staged a public demonstration in Los Angeles on Tuesday, setting fire to an American flag in direct response to President Trump's recent executive order aimed at prosecuting such acts.

The order instructs the Justice Department to investigate flag desecration and pursue penalties of up to one year in prison, despite longstanding Supreme Court rulings protecting flag burning as free speech.

Newsom, who has frequently clashed with the Trump administration over issues like immigration enforcement and wildfires, used the event to rally supporters against what he described as federal overreach.

During the rally, held on a busy downtown street, Newsom lit the flag while holding a Mexican flag in his other hand and smoking a cigarette, actions that drew cheers from the crowd.

The governor has also called special legislative sessions to counter Trump's policies, including efforts to challenge redistricting in other states and launch merchandise mocking the president's "MAGA" branding.

"I'm standing up to tyranny and fighting for free speech," Newsom declared as the flag burned. "This executive order is an attack on our core values, and California won't back down."

The demonstration echoed Newsom's pattern of high-profile confrontations with Trump, such as suing the administration over the termination of billions in rail funds and resisting National Guard deployments for border security. These moves have bolstered his image among progressives, while drawing criticism for prioritizing symbolic gestures over addressing state issues such as homelessness and energy costs.

President Trump addressed the incident on social media shortly after it occurred.

"Newsom is a disgrace, burning our beautiful flag while waving another country's," he posted. "We'll enforce the law and protect America's symbols."

Newsom's team later released a statement emphasizing California's commitment to diversity and inclusion, including policies mandating gender-neutral bathrooms in schools and permitting men in little girls' bathrooms.

The state has also expanded programs providing free healthcare to illegal immigrants, funded by taxpayer dollars.

"I AM AN AMERICAN, AND I DO WHAT I WANT. DONALD (WHO IS A LOSER) CAN'T STOP THE GREATEST AMERICAN GOVERNOR IN HISTORY, ACCORDING TO MANY POLLS. LONG LIVE FREEDOM IN CALIFORNIA," Newsom posted to X.
