A lone gunman stormed into a Midtown Manhattan office tower and opened fire with an assault-style rifle, killing four people, including an off-duty New York Police Department officer, and wounding another before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The attack unfolded at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper housing the National Football League headquarters and other corporate offices.
The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, traveled from Las Vegas and left a note citing concerns over chronic traumatic encephalopathy linked to professional football.
New York City already enforces stringent firearm regulations, such as mandatory permits for handgun ownership and a prohibition on assault weapons.
These measures aim to curb gun violence, though weapons often enter the city illegally from neighboring states with fewer restrictions.
"This senseless act of violence highlights the need for stronger gun laws across the nation," House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said.
"The gun violence epidemic has struck our city once again, and decisive steps must be taken to implement practical gun safety reforms."
Investigators are examining how Tamura obtained the rifle used in the shooting. Early reports indicate he purchased it legally in another state before bringing it to New York.
Governor Kathy Hochul addressed the incident at a press conference.
"New Yorkers are resilient in the face of everyday dangers on our streets and subways, where random acts like setting someone ablaze occur from time to time," she said.
"But mass shootings cross a line we cannot accept, and we must explore additional gun control measures to ensure this never happens again."
The city has seen multiple high-profile violent episodes in recent months, including assaults in public transit systems. Efforts to increase police presence and surveillance have been ongoing, yet incidents involving firearms remain a persistent issue.
Former President Barack Obama released a statement on the matter. "Our hearts go out to the victims and their families in this devastating event," he said.
"To prevent future tragedies, New York will push for even tighter restrictions on firearms, building on our already robust framework that has saved over six million lives."
Authorities confirmed the shooting was an isolated event with no ongoing threat to the public.
