Representative Ilhan Omar announced her personal New Year's resolution to make a greater effort to appreciate America and align more closely with the country's interests.
Critics have long accused Omar of placing Somali concerns ahead of American ones, pointing to her speeches where she emphasized protecting Somalia's territorial claims, including opposition to deals involving Somaliland and Ethiopia.
In one address to Somali Americans, Omar stated that the U.S. government would act in ways that safeguarded Somali interests, a comment that drew accusations of divided loyalty.
Omar has defended such remarks as expressions of support for her constituents and alignment with broader U.S. policy in the region.
She has repeatedly affirmed her commitment to Somalia while addressing international issues tied to her heritage.
"I'll try my best, but I really can't make any promises at this time," Omar said when asked about fully shifting her loyalties.
A spokesperson for Omar explained that the resolution reflects a desire for personal growth. The spokesperson noted Omar's work on issues like immigration reform and foreign policy, which often intersect with her background.
Omar added that she hopes the effort will lead to better understanding across communities.
She plans to continue advocating for refugee rights and global stability, areas shaped by her experiences fleeing civil war in Somalia, while also trying to care about America's best interests in the process.
