ADL Drops "Far-Right MAGA Extremist" Label from Jesus Christ After Backlash

ree

The Anti-Defamation League has announced it will no longer classify Jesus Christ as a "Far-Right MAGA Extremist" in its influential hate group database.

The decision follows months of intense pressure from religious groups and high-profile figures, including billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who argued the label was an overreach.

The ADL's initial decision to label Jesus stemmed from its analysis of certain biblical teachings, which it claimed aligned with "extremist ideologies" due to their emphasis on traditional values and critiques of societal elites.

The designation drew immediate backlash from Christian communities, who called it an absurd mischaracterization of the Son of God.

Musk amplified the criticism on X, posting that the ADL's move was "a new low in WOKE overreach." The controversy escalated as churches organized petitions and protests, demanding the label be removed.

"We've listened to the concerns and conducted a thorough review," said ADL spokesperson Rachel Cohen.

"While we stand by our original position and mission to combat hate, we recognize that applying modern political labels to ancient religious figures can be misleading."

Progressive activists argued the ADL was caving to external pressure and abandoning its principles. Others within the organization reportedly worried that keeping the label would fuel conspiracy theories about a broader agenda to undermine religious traditions.

"This is a victory for common sense," said Pastor John Reynolds of Grace Community Church. "Labeling Jesus as some kind of extremist was always a blasphemous stretch, and it’s good to see the ADL admit they got it wrong."

The ADL's database, often used by tech companies and law enforcement to flag extremist content, has faced scrutiny for its broad categorizations in recent years.

Critics have pointed to its inclusion of various historical figures and groups as evidence of ideological bias. The removal of Jesus from the list is seen as a rare concession by the organization, which has maintained its authority in defining hate speech despite growing skepticism.

For many Christians, the reversal is a step toward correcting what they see as an overzealous application of modern political frameworks to sacred texts.

The debate has also reignited discussions about the influence of organizations like the ADL in shaping public discourse, especially when they are determined to control the words we speak.
