Big Pharma Doesn’t Appreciate Being Dragged into Mass Shooting Debate

Pharmaceutical industry leaders voiced strong objections to suggestions that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors played a role in the Minneapolis massacre.

The shooting occurred at Annunciation Catholic School, where a transgender gunman fired through church windows during a Mass, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to 17 others.

Authorities identified the shooter as Robert Westman, who targeted the gathering marking the start of the school year.

Executives from major drug companies pointed out that discussions around mass violence have traditionally centered on firearms access. They emphasized that their medications undergo rigorous scientific testing before approval.

"We conduct extensive studies on our products, and the risk of violent behavior remains extremely low," said Pfizer CEO Albert Bonner.

The company has long maintained that antidepressants help millions manage mental health conditions effectively.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently highlighted possible connections between psychiatric drugs and such incidents, renewing a longstanding debate.

Vice President JD Vance echoed similar sentiments, attributing part of the crisis to overprescription in youth.

"These medications are turning our kids into ticking time bombs," Kennedy stated during a press briefing.

Federal health agencies have documented cases where SSRIs correlated with aggressive acts in patients. Research from independent reviews indicates a pattern in several high-profile shootings.

A spokesman for Eli Lilly dismissed these claims as unfounded distractions from real issues. The firm produces popular antidepressants like Prozac, which doctors prescribe to combat depression and anxiety.

"Nothing is out of the ordinary with our SSRIs, and we should focus on expanding access to help suppress harmful thoughts," the spokesman added.

Industry analysts note that prescription rates continue to rise amid growing mental health awareness. Public health campaigns promote these drugs as essential tools for societal well-being.

Merck executive Thomas Keen reinforced the call to prioritize gun control measures. He argued that blaming pharmaceuticals ignores broader societal factors contributing to violence.

"The conversation has always been about the guns, and we need to keep it there," Keen said.

Regulatory bodies like the FDA routinely monitor adverse events related to medications. Despite constant reports of behavioral changes, often violent, approvals remain in place.
