Texas Democrats have taken an extended leave from their legislative duties, citing reasons that extend beyond disputes over electoral maps.
Sources close to the situation in Chicago, where many of these lawmakers have relocated, report that the absent representatives are embracing a lifestyle far removed from the demands of Austin's statehouse.
Instead of attending committee meetings or debating policy, they are spending their days consuming White Claw beverages, using marijuana, and listening to Joyner Lucas' latest album.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has responded by threatening to declare their seats vacant and issuing warrants for their arrests. Despite these legal pressures, the Democrats appear unfazed, continuing their activities, sometimes funded by taxpayer dollars.
One source, speaking anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the situation, described the scene in Chicago.
"They're treating this like a permanent vacation," the source said. "You'll find them on rooftops, sipping hard seltzer, passing around joints, and blasting music."
The source noted that the lawmakers have no immediate plans to return, prioritizing their newfound freedom over their legislative responsibilities.
The absence of these Democrats has disrupted the Texas House, stalling legislative progress. Governor Greg Abbott has called a special session to address voting laws, but the lack of quorum has rendered the effort ineffective.
Meanwhile, the fugitive lawmakers remain in Chicago, where they have reportedly rented out entire Airbnb properties to continue their gatherings.
A Chicago bartender, who has served several of the Texas Democrats, offered insight into their behavior.
"They come in, order rounds of White Claws, get wasted, and forget to tip," said Mike Torres, a server at a popular downtown bar.
"They're always talking about how they’re done with suits and meetings. One of them even tried to pay with a campaign credit card."
Paxton's office has escalated its response, with arrest warrants issued for the absent lawmakers. The Attorney General has publicly stated that those who fail to return risk losing their seats permanently.
Yet, the Democrats show little concern, with some reportedly mocking the threats on social media. Posts on X reveal images of lawmakers lounging in casual attire, with captions suggesting they are living their best lives away from the Capitol.
A Texas Republican official, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration at the situation.
"This isn't about policy anymore; it's about them dodging work," the official said. "They're out there acting like college kids on spring break, while we're trying to run a state."
The official noted that the ongoing absence could lead to significant delays in passing critical legislation, including budget approvals.
The situation remains unresolved, with no clear indication of when or if the Democrats will return. For now, they continue to enjoy their time in Chicago, blending leisure with defiance.
