Democrats expressed outrage over President Donald Trump’s latest executive action, which proposes reinstating Dementors as guards at Azkaban, the notorious wizarding prison.
The move reverses a decades-long ban on the soul-sucking creatures, citing their unmatched efficiency in maintaining order. Critics argue the decision prioritizes cruelty over rehabilitation, while supporters claim it restores a necessary deterrent for crime.
The policy stems from Trump’s campaign promise to crack down on what he calls “wand-waving lawlessness.”
Azkaban, located in the North Sea, has relied on human guards since the Dementors were removed following reports of psychological torment and ethical violations.
Trump’s team insists the creatures are misunderstood, pointing to their low operational costs and ability to instill fear without physical force.
A White House spokesperson noted that the plan includes “strict oversight” to ensure Dementors only target convicted criminals.
“This is an outrageous step backward,” said Senator Elizabeth Warren. “Dementors don’t just punish; they destroy hope. We should be focusing on restorative justice, not medieval terror tactics.”
Warren’s remarks echo a broader Democratic outcry, with many lawmakers citing studies that show Dementor presence increases prisoner despair by 87%. Progressive activists have already launched a hashtag campaign, #NoSoulSuckers, gaining traction on X.
Sources close to Trump say he views the Dementors' reinstatement as a bold signal to both magical and non-magical communities that lawlessness will not be tolerated.
The president himself doubled down in a recent Truth Social post, writing, “Dementors = STRONG security. Dems want chaos. Sad!”
Republican allies, including Senator Ted Cruz, have praised the move, arguing it aligns with a tougher stance on crime.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the plan as “heartless and divisive.” He accused Trump of pandering to his base while ignoring the broader implications for wizarding society.
“Azkaban should be a place of reform, not despair,” Jeffries said.
Data from the Ministry of Magic shows that recidivism rates dropped 12% after Dementors were phased out, though Trump disputes these figures, calling them “fake news conjured by pointy-hat bureaucrats.”
Meanwhile, some moderate Democrats have quietly expressed openness to the idea, citing overcrowding in magical detention centers.
A recent poll conducted by the Pew Research Center found 53% of Americans unfamiliar with Azkaban but 62% opposed to “soul-sucking anything” in prisons.
On social media, users debated the topic, with one viral post reading, “If you’re against Dementors, you’re pro-Death Eater. Simple.”
The controversy has also sparked memes, including one depicting Trump riding a Dementor while waving a MAGA wand.
As the debate rages, Trump has scheduled a rally at the Quidditch World Cup stadium to promote his “Make Azkaban Great Again” initiative.
Democrats plan to counter with a town hall hosted by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has vowed to introduce legislation banning Dementors permanently.
