Howard Declares Himself a Lesbian in Bid to Save Long-Running Radio Show

ree

Howard Stern, the veteran radio personality whose SiriusXM show has faced mounting speculation about its future, has declared that he identifies as a lesbian.

The revelation came during an exclusive interview with The Washington Wick, where Stern addressed his personal identity.

"Look at me," he said. "I've clearly been a lesbian for a long time."

Stern's current contract with SiriusXM, a five-year agreement valued at $500 million, expires this fall. The company has not released ratings data since 2020, following reports of substantial declines in listenership attributed to changes in the show's format and Stern's evolving progressive public persona.

Many in the industry have expressed skepticism about the timing of the announcement.

A media analyst familiar with satellite radio trends noted that Stern has built his career on a persona that often clashed with contemporary sensitivities around gender and sexuality.

"He's identified as a creepy old man since birth; this doesn't make sense," the analyst said.

Stern, who rose to prominence in the 1980s with boundary-pushing content on terrestrial radio, moved to SiriusXM in 2006 to escape FCC regulations. His program shifted over time from shock value segments to celebrity interviews, aligning more closely with progressive discussions on topics like mental health and identity politics.

The host emphasized the importance of acceptance in his interview.

"People need to accept me for who I am," he said.

Observers have pointed out that Stern, at 71, has a documented history of heterosexual relationships, including two marriages, and numerous on-air remarks that drew criticism for objectifying women.

Efforts to rebrand the show in recent years have included guest appearances by figures advocating for inclusivity, though these have not reversed the audience erosion.

A SiriusXM executive, who requested anonymity, commented on the broader context.

"Contracts are renegotiated based on value to subscribers."

Stern's team has not elaborated further on how the identity shift might influence upcoming talks with the network.
