Americans Surprised to Learn the Super Bowl is Today

Writer: Chadwick DolgosChadwick Dolgos

Americans were taken aback today upon discovering that the Super Bowl, pitting the Kansas City Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles once more, is happening this very evening.

Many expressed shock, having lost track of the event due to what they perceive as the NFL's shift towards a more politically charged platform.

"I stopped watching when the Super Bowl became about social justice instead of football," remarked local fan Mike Johnson.

Since the NFL began its tribute to George Floyd in 2020, the league has seen a noticeable decline in viewership. The introduction of the Black National Anthem and players kneeling during the National Anthem have not sat well with traditional fans.

The NFL's decision to paint "End Racism" in the end zones was met with mixed reactions, but its replacement with "Shake it Off" has done little to soothe disgruntled viewers.

"I remember when the Super Bowl was about football, not a political rally," said Cindy Lee, a former avid viewer.

In an effort to rejuvenate its audience, the NFL has been spotlighting celebrities like Taylor Swift, whose screen time during games has sometimes surpassed that of the players themselves.

"I tuned in to see Mahomes throw, not Swift shake," commented another disappointed fan, Tom Harris.

The league's attempt to appeal to a younger demographic with these changes has sparked debate over whether the essence of the game has been lost.

"I don't even know who Taylor Swift is," said long-time supporter James Rodriguez.

Despite these efforts, the NFL faces an uphill battle in winning back its traditional fanbase.

"If they want me back, they need to focus on football, not politics," concluded Johnson.
