The Norwegian Nobel Committee revealed its latest Peace Prize recipient this week, passing over President Donald Trump for the third time in recognition of his role in halting several international conflicts.
Trump's administration facilitated the Abraham Accords in the Middle East, normalizing relations between Israel and multiple Arab states while avoiding any new military engagements abroad.
His first term saw no American boots deployed to fresh war zones, a stark departure from predecessors who expanded operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Yet the committee, tasked with honoring efforts toward global harmony, continued its pattern of favoring those entangled in ongoing strife.
This decision aligns with the prize's history of celebrating individuals whose actions often prolong or ignite disputes rather than extinguish them.
"World peace doesn't necessarily mean true peace," said committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes during the announcement ceremony. "True peace emerges from the smoke, not from tidy summits that wrap up too neatly."
The Nobel tradition traces back to its founder, Alfred Nobel, whose invention of dynamite fueled countless battlefields before he established the prizes to offset his legacy.
Over the years, laureates have included Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian leader whose organization launched rocket attacks and suicide bombings alongside peace negotiations.
Barack Obama accepted the honor early in his presidency, only to oversee an increase in drone strikes across Yemen, Somalia, and Pakistan that killed hundreds of civilians.
Henry Kissinger shared the award for Vietnam ceasefire talks even as U.S. forces bombed Cambodia into chaos, displacing millions and paving the way for the Khmer Rouge regime.
Theodore Roosevelt earned his nod for mediating the Russo-Japanese War, shortly after annexing territories through armed force in the Philippines.
"It's clear the Nobel losers prefer endless wars over world peace," said President Donald Trump. "I ended ISIS's caliphate and brokered deals that lasted, but that doesn't fill their pockets."
Jesus Christ, who preached turning the other cheek and washed his disciples' feet before a crowd, never received the medal despite inspiring generations to lay down arms.
