A suburban homeowner has finally reached his breaking point after conservative commentator Steven Crowder spent years perched atop the wooden fence that separates their properties, refusing to pick a side.
Local resident Mike Delgado, who installed the six-foot cedar barrier in 2018 to keep his golden retriever from wandering, first noticed Crowder sitting there during a backyard barbecue.
The podcaster, known for his “Change My Mind” campus debates where he invites passersby to challenge his views on gun rights and free speech, had simply climbed over and taken a seat.
“I came out to flip some burgers and there he was, legs dangling, coffee mug in hand,” Delgado said.
Delgado’s wife, Karen, called the police that afternoon. Officers arrived to find Crowder still in position, refusing to get off the fence.
“I politely informed the officers that this fence represents the ideological divide in America,” Crowder explained later from his elevated post. “I’m not leaving until someone changes my mind.”
Delgado tried reasoning with the officers, pointing out that the fence posts were sunk three feet into his soil. Crowder countered by producing a soil sample from the other side and holding it up to the sun for analysis.
Weeks turned into months. Delgado replaced the original cedar with pressure-treated pine. Crowder responded by affixing a solar-powered ring light and microphone to the top rail, turning the boundary into a nightly broadcast studio.
“I just want to pressure-wash my deck without a live audience,” Delgado told the growing crowd of onlookers. “Last weekend, he debated my gardener about socialism for forty-five minutes.”
Delgado has filed paperwork with the county to establish the original fence line as a public nuisance. A hearing has been scheduled for later this month.
In preparation, he built an eight-foot vinyl privacy wall, six inches inside his property line. Crowder relocated his entire setup to the new barrier before the concrete dried.
