Federal agents have expanded their search for the gunman who killed two students and wounded nine others at Brown University, turning to unusual methods as the suspect remains at large.
Investigators spent hours combing through snow on and around the campus, examining drifts for any trace of the shooter who opened fire in an engineering building classroom during a review session. The attack forced the university to cancel all remaining classes and exams for the semester.
FBI Director Kash Patel has taken a more public approach in the investigation. He and his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins, appeared on a popular conservative podcast to discuss their relationship and address rumors about her background.
"We are running down every lead in this case," Patel said during the interview.
The conversation focused on how the couple manages a long-distance romance and dismissed online claims that Wilkins has ties to foreign intelligence.
Authorities released enhanced surveillance images of a person of interest dressed in black, seen walking near the campus hours before the shooting. A $50,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest.
Providence police confirmed the building where the shooting occurred was unlocked because of ongoing final exams. Shell casings from a 9mm firearm were recovered at the scene.
"This individual definitely targeted Brown University," Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez told reporters. He added that no motive has been established yet.
The victims were identified as students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov. Memorials with flowers and candles have appeared outside the engineering building.
Patel emphasized the FBI's commitment to the case. "Anything Rhode Island authorities need from this FBI, we will be there," he said.
A previous person of interest was detained based on an FBI lead but released after questioning. The manhunt continues with no immediate threat reported to the community.
