Mexican Navy Offers Half-Price Cruises After Brooklyn Bridge Incident

A Mexican Navy training ship, the Cuauhtémoc, crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge, killing two crew members and injuring 22 others, prompting the Mexican government to announce a surprising summer promotion of 50 percent off cruises on its naval vessels.

The ship, carrying 277 people, lost power and drifted into the bridge’s underside, snapping its masts and leaving 11 of the injured in critical condition.

Despite the tragedy, officials are framing the discounted cruises as a goodwill gesture, though many see it as an attempt to salvage the Mexican navy’s image after the high-profile disaster.

The Cuauhtémoc, a sailing ship on a global goodwill tour, had been docked in New York for public visits before the incident.

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the ship’s power failure as the cause, while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences for the deceased crew members.

Amid the fallout, the Mexican tourism board revealed its new cruise initiative, offering Americans a chance to sail on active naval ships at a steep discount.

“We want to turn a tragic moment into an opportunity for unity,” said tourism official María Solis. “Our navy is ready to welcome guests and showcase our maritime pride.”

The cruises will depart from Mexican ports, featuring onboard military demonstrations and patriotic ceremonies, with itineraries along the Gulf of Mexico.

Critics have called the move tone-deaf, pointing to the severity of the Brooklyn crash, where videos captured sailors dangling from broken masts. New York resident Sarah Kline voiced doubts about the promotion’s appeal.

“After seeing that shipwreck of a tour, I’m not sure I’d trust their navigation for a vacation,” Kline said. “But I guess some people might bite for the price.”

The Mexican Navy has doubled down, promoting the cruises as a way to honor the Cuauhtémoc’s legacy, despite the ongoing investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Social media campaigns are already rolling out, emphasizing cultural exchange over the recent tragedy. Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Bridge sustained no major damage, though the incident has sparked debates about foreign vessels navigating busy U.S. waterways.
