Israel and Iran have announced a one-day ceasefire to commemorate Juneteenth, a Biden-created holiday only celebrated in America.
The agreement, brokered through a series of late-night Zoom calls, stipulates that both nations will pause hostilities to engage in cultural festivities.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will each host Juneteenth cookouts in their respective countries, with the war set to resume immediately after.
Netanyahu, speaking from Jerusalem, emphasized the importance of the gesture.
“We recognize the global significance of Juneteenth and wish to show solidarity by grilling kebabs and playing Kendrick Lamar,” he said.
The Israeli military has confirmed that all operations will halt for 24 hours, with soldiers instructed to attend diversity workshops and sample soul food prepared by local caterers.
Iran, similarly, has embraced the occasion. Khamenei, addressing a crowd in Tehran, outlined plans for a nationwide celebration.
“Juneteenth is a moment to reflect on freedom and justice,” he declared. State media reported that Iranian forces will spend the day distributing commemorative Juneteenth flags and hosting lectures on critical race theory.
The ceasefire comes amid ongoing tensions, with both nations engaged in a protracted conflict involving missile strikes and proxy wars across the region. The United Nations, which was not consulted on the agreement, expressed confusion but welcomed the brief pause.
“This is a historic moment for cultural sensitivity,” said a UN spokesperson, who requested anonymity due to the risk of being invited to both cookouts.
Netanyahu’s office released a schedule detailing a Juneteenth parade through Tel Aviv, complete with floats celebrating African American history.
“We’ve even invited a Beyoncé impersonator to perform,” he added, noting that the event would be live-streamed to promote global unity.
The Israeli leader stressed that the ceasefire would end promptly at midnight, with airstrikes resuming “as a matter of principle.”
Khamenei, meanwhile, described Iran’s festivities as a chance to showcase the nation’s commitment to progressive values.
“Our people will gather in the streets to eat fried chicken and discuss the importance of allyship,” he said.
Sources close to the Supreme Leader confirmed that the military has been ordered to prepare for “eternal conflict” starting the following day, with no further pauses planned.
The international community has struggled to process the announcement, with analysts noting the incongruity of two nations pausing a geopolitical feud to celebrate a U.S.-centric holiday.
Both leaders, however, insisted that their participation reflects a deep understanding of global social justice movements. As the ceasefire takes effect, the world watches to see if the cookouts will proceed without incident or if the war will resume ahead of schedule.
