Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed surprise that public interest in the Jeffrey Epstein files has not waned following the Justice Department's recent partial release of heavily redacted documents.
The department made thousands of pages available just before the Christmas season, including many previously leaked materials and hundreds of photographs from investigations into the late financier's sex trafficking activities.
Officials described this as the first phase, with more to come after reviews to protect victim identities.
"It's almost Christmas, and this is what people are obsessing over?" Bondi said in remarks to reporters. "Worry more about getting your shopping and cooking done; let us worry about these files."
She was disgusted by the fact that people continue to focus on the matter after the initial disclosure, which she portrayed as sufficient to address immediate concerns until additional redactions could be completed.
The release followed congressional passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a bipartisan measure requiring the Justice Department to disclose unclassified records related to Epstein's crimes.
Epstein, a convicted sex offender, died in custody years ago while facing federal charges involving the exploitation of underage girls.
Bondi has overseen the process amid promises of transparency from the administration.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the phased approach, noting ongoing work to handle sensitive content. He suggested hundreds of thousands more pages would follow in the coming weeks.
Bondi reiterated the department's commitment to full compliance in the long term while questioning the timing of heightened scrutiny during the festive period.
The partial rollout has prompted bipartisan lawmakers to demand the remainder without delay, citing the law's intent for comprehensive access.
