According to our source with ties to the administration, President Donald Trump has reportedly begun musing over renaming the state of New Mexico to either "New America" or "Trump Country," following his recent executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America."
President Trump signed the executive order on January 20, 2025, which directed the U.S. Secretary of the Interior to change federal references to the Gulf of Mexico on all official documents, maps, and communications to "Gulf of America" within 30 days.
This action has been met with mixed reactions, with some seeing it as an assertion of American sovereignty over the region, while others consider it a symbolic gesture with little practical effect outside of U.S. federal usage.
During a private meeting at Mar-a-Lago, Trump hinted at further naming changes.
"I like the sound of New America. Or maybe Trump Country. It's all about making America great again, and what better way than to stop naming everything after Mexico. I mean, have you seen the place?" Trump said.
Legal and constitutional experts have quickly weighed in on the feasibility of renaming a state by executive order.
Professor Alice Hill from Washington Wick University's Law Center explained, "Renaming a state is not within the powers of the President through an executive order. The process to change a state's name involves both the state legislature and the U.S. Congress. It would require a constitutional amendment or at least a legislative act, neither of which can be bypassed by an executive order."
Marcus Stevens, a historian specializing in the racial divide of U.S. geography, added, "Historically, state names have been deeply tied to cultural, historical, and indigenous identities. The renaming of New Mexico, which has roots in Spanish colonial history and Native American heritage, would be a complex and contentious process, far beyond the simple renaming of a geographic feature like a gulf."
The timing of these discussions has also sparked debate. Critics argue that with numerous pressing issues like inflation, immigration, and violent crime, focusing on renaming states could be seen as a distraction.
However, supporters of Trump's actions view it as a bold move to reinforce national pride and identity.
"Naming a state after Mexico was retarded," said one user on X.
The discussion around renaming New Mexico has also led to speculative comments among political commentators, with some suggesting other states might get new names.
"Maybe the orange man will rename Florida NAZI, GERMANY!" said @DogPoop2 on X, a popular progressive Democrat account with more than 3.4 million followers for absolutely no reason.
As the debate continues, there's no clear indication that President Trump will proceed with an official attempt to rename New Mexico. We will update this story as it develops.
