The quiet town of South Park, Colorado, is shocked after the lifeless body of lifelong local fourth-grader Eric Cartman was discovered behind South Park Elementary.
Cartman was found with multiple stab wounds shortly after the airing of this week’s episode of the animated series South Park. The episode, which took a slight swing at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of orchestrating mass killings, has sparked intense speculation about the timing of Cartman’s demise.
Authorities are investigating the death as suspicious, with no suspects named at this time.
The animated sequence showed a caricatured Jewish mother wagging her finger at the prime minister, lamenting his actions as a betrayal of Jewish values.
Cartman was not featured prominently in the episode, but had a brief scene mocking the depicted mother’s accent. Hours later, his body was found in a dumpster behind the school, raising questions about whether the show’s content played a role in his death.
“This is a tragedy for our little town,” Officer Barbrady said. “I mean, Cartman was Cartman, but nobody deserves this. We’re looking into whether this has anything to do with that dang cartoon show.”
The investigation has drawn attention to the show’s history of tackling sensitive geopolitical issues with a satirical edge. South Park has long courted controversy, from its depictions of religious figures to its commentary on global politics.
This week’s episode, however, appears to have struck a particularly sensitive nerve, given its focus on Israel’s leadership and cultural stereotypes. Local residents are whispering about possible connections between the show’s content and Cartman’s death.
“Eric was always stirring the pot, but this feels different,” said Wendy Testaburger, a classmate of Cartman’s, who discovered the body while taking a shortcut behind the school.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if someone out there didn’t like what the show said about Kyle's people.”
Police have cordoned off the area behind the school, where forensic teams are combing through evidence. The coroner’s office confirmed the cause of death as multiple stab wounds but declined to provide further details pending the investigation.
“I don’t know what’s going on, but this ain’t right,” said Randy Marsh, a local geologist and father of Cartman’s friend Stan. “I’m not saying it’s Mossad, but… you know, it’s probably Mossad.”
The creators of South Park have not commented on Cartman’s death, though a spokesperson for the show confirmed that the next episode will proceed as planned.
This is an ongoing investigation.
