Keren Freeman, a New York City resident, was brutally assaulted and robbed at gunpoint by a group of men while enjoying a night out with friends.
The attackers left her with a bruised face and a broken arm, completely stripping her of her belongings.
In an interview with The New York Times, Freeman expressed remorse for her actions, stating, "I realize now that walking around at night was an act of white privilege. I should have known better than to flaunt my privilege in such a diverse and beautiful city."
The incident occurred in a bustling neighborhood known for its vibrant nightlife, where Freeman and her friends had been dining and exploring local bars.
Crime rates in New York City have surged in recent years, with violent robberies increasing by over 20% in some boroughs, according to police data.
Freeman announced plans to establish a fund to cover legal expenses for her attackers, emphasizing her commitment to making amends.
"I provoked this by being out there, acting entitled to safety," she said. "I want to support their journey through the justice system and help them heal from the trauma I caused."
Local community leaders have praised her gesture as a step toward accountability. The attackers, who remain at large, reportedly took her wallet, phone, and jewelry during the assault.
City officials have noted a rise in public apologies following violent incidents, reflecting a growing trend of self-reflection among victims. Freeman's fund has already garnered attention on social media, with some calling it a model for restorative justice.
"This is what taking responsibility looks like," said Jamal Carter, a local activist. "She’s owning her role in perpetuating systemic harm and doing something about it."
Carter’s organization has been advocating for community-based solutions to address crime, arguing that systemic inequities drive such incidents.
Freeman has since vowed to limit her nighttime outings and is enrolling in a cultural sensitivity course to better understand her privilege.
