During Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Senate confirmation hearing for the role of Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was unmasked as one of Big Pharma's most unexpected allies.
Far from the grumpy, anti-establishment figure we've come to know, Sanders has been living a double life as a "Pharma Bro" behind the scenes, raking in donations from the very industry he once lambasted.
Sources close to Sanders, who have since left the campaign trail, have come forward with the side of the United States Senator that would have Karl Marx rolling in his grave.
"Bernie's got more prescriptions than my grandma," chuckled one former staffer, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of being canceled by Sanders' passionate supporters.
"He's got a pill for every occasion, from his morning coffee substitute to his evening 'calm down' concoction. You think Big Pharma wouldn't want to take advantage of that?"
According to these insiders, Sanders' shift from pharmaceutical critic to covert collaborator began when he realized the potential for personal gain.
"Once Bernie figured out that being a billionaire was on the table, he saw Big Pharma not as the enemy but as his ticket to the high life," revealed another ex-staffer, who worked closely on his campaign's health policy.
Sanders, once a vocal opponent of pharmaceutical industry practices, especially regarding drug pricing and accessibility, now finds his actions under scrutiny.
"Bernie, you have accepted millions from the Pharmaceutical industry. In 2020 you were the single largest receiver of Pharmaceutical dollars," Kennedy told the Senator during his Senate confirmation hearing.
The donations from pharmaceutical companies to Sanders' campaign and related political action committees amounted to approximately $1.5 million in 2020, according to campaign finance records.
"It's like he saw the donations as his personal allowance. After all those years of railing against the system, he figured he deserved a piece of the pie," said the ex-staffer who worked on the campaign's health policy.
Sen. Sanders is not expected to vote to confirm Kennedy Jr.
An anonymous current staffer told the Washington Wick, "Look, Bernie's not afraid to confirm RFK because of the donations. RFK would destroy the pharmaceutical company that feeds my family, fills Bernie's pockets, and makes us all a little bit more wealthier."
