The NFL has reportedly mandated that Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny master English before his upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance, according to sources close to The Washington Wick.
The league, eager to maintain its carefully curated image, wants to ensure the rapper’s performance doesn’t scream “we love open borders” too loudly, despite his catalogue being entirely in Spanish.
Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has been spotted in intensive English as a Second Language classes in Miami, juggling verb conjugations and football terminology between sold-out tour dates.
Insiders say the NFL’s request stems from a desire to avoid alienating viewers who might interpret an all-Spanish performance as a political statement. The league, which has faced scrutiny for its handling of cultural issues, reportedly sees this as a way to keep the halftime show “neutral.”
An NFL spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the move.
“We’re thrilled to have Bad Bunny, but we need him to say ‘touchdown’ and ‘America’ a few times to keep things balanced,” they said.
The spokesperson added that the league has provided a custom curriculum, including phrases like “I love America” and “God bless the USA.”
Bad Bunny’s unapologetic use of Spanish has been a hallmark of his global success. His 2022 album Un Verano Sin Ti became the first Spanish-language record nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys.
A source close to Bad Bunny’s team revealed the singer’s frustration but noted his commitment to the gig.
“Benito’s learning ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ phonetically, but he’s not happy about it,” the source said.
The league has faced pressure to address its stance on immigration, particularly after high-profile partnerships with organizations tied to progressive causes. Some insiders speculate the English mandate is a calculated move to dodge accusations of pandering to open-border policies.
A linguistics professor consulted by the NFL offered an assessment. “If you're going to perform in a country, you should probably perform in its native language,” she said.
As preparations for the Super Bowl continue, Bad Bunny is reportedly practicing his English with flashcards and watching reruns of Monday Night Football to nail the accent.
Whether he’ll deliver a flawless “Hail Mary” or slip back into Spanish mid-performance remains to be seen.
For now, the NFL is banking on a halftime show that speaks the language of football, patriotism, and carefully curated neutrality.
