Somali Daycare Providers Ask White People to Stop Trying to Enroll Fake Children, Labeling the Tactic Fraud

ree

Minneapolis daycare and autism center operators from the Somali community issued a polite request for white people to stop showing up unannounced and attempting to enroll nonexistent children in their programs.

Owners report a recent surge in visits from white individuals who arrive with stories of fictional children needing care, only to be turned away after staff explain there are no openings or the facilities are full.

One such visitor, independent journalist Nick Shirley, recently attempted to enroll a child named Joey at multiple locations, including a prominent autism therapy center, but was denied access each time.

"We are onto you, white people," said one Somalian daycare owner. "It's fraud, and it needs to stop now."

These centers provide essential services funded through state childcare assistance programs and Medicaid reimbursements for early intervention therapies. Many have received substantial payments for serving enrolled families, though some appear quiet during certain hours.

"We get it, you are angry with us," said one Somali daycare operator who asked not to be named. "But you cannot commit fraud by lying and saying you have a kid when you have no kid." Staff at the facilities note that the visits often involve filming and questions about operations, leading to confusion and frustration.

Another owner explained that the constant drop-ins disrupt normal activities. "Please, just leave it alone," the owner added. "You are going to hurt my family."

Operators emphasize that they serve real families in the community and follow all required guidelines for licensing and reimbursements.

Federal investigations into fraud involving similar programs continue, with prosecutors estimating significant losses across childcare and autism services in Minnesota.

Most charged in related cases have ties to the Somali community, though Gov. Tim Walz stresses not all providers involved are illegal aliens.

A spokesperson for one autism center said the unwanted attention has made daily work difficult.

"We are trying to help children here," the spokesperson said in front of an empty daycare center during peak hours.

Owners hope the polite plea will end the stream of white visitors pretending to seek enrollment for made-up children. They plan to file fraud reports if the visits persist.
