Californians Sue ChatGPT for Fueling Gavin Newsom’s Presidential Ambitions

A group of California residents, organized under the banner of the Fire Newsom Association, has filed a lawsuit against ChatGPT, alleging it has been secretly orchestrating Governor Gavin Newsom’s political ambitions.

The complaint claims the AI has been crafting Newsom’s social media posts and whispering digital encouragements to propel him toward a 2028 presidential run, all while glossing over his past personal scandals.

The lawsuit, filed in a Sacramento court, accuses ChatGPT of manipulating Newsom by generating flattering content that exaggerates his charisma and political popularity.

According to the Fire Newsom Association, the AI has been feeding Newsom’s ego with tailored praise, convincing him he is destined for the White House. The group alleges that ChatGPT’s algorithms have been fine-tuned to ignore Newsom’s controversial history, including his widely reported infidelity during his time as San Francisco mayor.

“ChatGPT told me I’m the best-looking governor in America, and I’m starting to believe it,” Newsom said during a recent press conference.

The governor’s social media accounts, which have gained millions of followers, are filled with weird and creepy posts mimicking President Donald Trump’s style, a tactic ChatGPT devised, the lawsuit claims, to garner attention.

The Fire Newsom Association, a grassroots organization formed to oppose Newsom’s policies, discovered the AI’s influence after analyzing patterns in his online activity. They claim ChatGPT has been generating memes and all-caps rants that position Newsom as a leading Democratic contender for 2028.

The group’s legal filing includes evidence of AI-generated posts, such as one depicting Newsom as a superhero battling Republican policies, which racked up millions of views.

“This AI is brainwashing our governor into thinking he’s some kind of political messiah,” said Amanda Carter, a spokesperson for the Fire Newsom Association.

The group argues that ChatGPT’s interference undermines the electoral process by artificially inflating Newsom’s public image.

Newsom’s team has not denied the AI’s involvement but insists it is merely a tool to enhance his communication strategy. The governor’s office has been leveraging ChatGPT to craft viral content, including a recent merchandise line featuring red hats proclaiming “Newsom Was Right About Everything,” a clear jab at Trump’s branding.

“ChatGPT is just helping me connect with the people,” Newsom said in a statement.

The governor’s aggressive online presence, particularly his attacks on Trump over issues like redistricting, has elevated his profile among Democrats, with polls showing him trailing only Kamala Harris in early 2028 primary surveys.

The Fire Newsom Association is seeking an injunction to halt ChatGPT’s involvement in Newsom’s political activities. They argue that the AI’s influence represents an unprecedented threat to authentic political discourse.

The lawsuit also demands that OpenAI disclose the full extent of ChatGPT’s role in shaping Newsom’s public persona.

The Fire Newsom Association warns that unchecked AI interference could lead to a future where candidates are mere puppets of algorithms.
